These symptoms that spoil life are sometimes unnoticed and sometimes underestimated. However, depression is not just a mood change; it is a serious condition caused by biological, psychological and environmental factors coming together.
Some people think depression is a choice. It is dismissed with advice like, “Pull yourself together, keep your spirits up.” However, the truth is that the roots of depression are much deeper. If you have a family history of depression, if there have been certain changes in your brain chemistry, or if life has tested you with unexpected losses and traumas, depression may be inevitable. Moreover, each person experiences depression differently. Some become silent and withdrawn; others react with anger and build walls between themselves and those around them. Therapy helps a person realize their thought patterns, get to know themselves better, and find solutions. In some cases, medication is also used. Antidepressants can help a person feel more balanced by regulating brain chemistry. However, it is very important that this process is managed by a specialist. Unconscious use of medication or avoiding treatment can make the process more difficult. Lifestyle changes are very effective in alleviating the effects of depression. Regular exercise helps the body naturally release endorphins and improves mood. Healthy eating, especially foods rich in omega-3, B vitamins and magnesium, can support mental health. A quality sleep pattern is one of the cornerstones of mental and physical health. Getting social support is also extremely important. Being in an environment where we can express ourselves and feel understood can help us emerge from the darkness of depression.
